Marty Nemko makes more than a few good points about the bachelor’s degree in his article. I have had a lot of issues with not finishing school. This article provides many points about how universities around the nation are offering a product that costs more than it is worth and how that product fails many more people than it serves.
Even worse, most of those college dropouts leave the campus having learned little of value, and with a mountain of debt and devastated self-esteem from their unsuccessful struggles. Perhaps worst of all, even those who do manage to graduate too rarely end up in careers that require a college education. So it’s not surprising that when you hop into a cab or walk into a restaurant, you’re likely to meet workers who spent years and their family’s life savings on college, only to end up with a job they could have done as a high-school dropout.
Also included in this article is some helpful information for people considering going to college.
If your child’s high-school grades and test scores are in the bottom half for his class, resist the attempts of four-year colleges to woo him. Colleges make money whether or not a student learns, whether or not she graduates, and whether or not he finds good employment. Let the buyer beware. Consider an associate-degree program at a community college, or such nondegree options as apprenticeship programs (see http://www.khake.com), shorter career-preparation programs at community colleges, the military, and on-the-job training, especially at the elbow of a successful small-business owner.
And don’t forget…
If your child is one of the rare breed who knows what he wants to do and isn’t unduly attracted to academics or to the Animal House environment that characterizes many college-living arrangements, then take solace in the fact that countless other people have successfully taken the noncollege road less traveled. Some examples: Maya Angelou, David Ben-Gurion, Richard Branson, Coco Chanel, Walter Cronkite, Michael Dell, Walt Disney, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Bill Gates, Alex Haley, Ernest Hemingway, Wolfgang Puck, John D. Rockefeller Sr., Ted Turner, Frank Lloyd Wright, and nine U.S. presidents, from Washington to Truman.
(That’s for all you out there coming here for the lulz)
These are pictures I have been collecting on my desktop at work. They’re here for me to keep and for you to enjoy. I don’t remember where I got half of these so if you need to know where these came from I’m sure I could think it through.
Two of them were too tall to display in a thumbnail (stupid Wordpress), so here’s a link and a Link.
As almost anyone I know should know, I like pornography. If you didn’t know this about me then you wern’t paying attention. I like collecting it, I like discussing it and (most of all) I like it when people are disgusted by porn. It’s just so silly. Really, what’s so wrong about it? I believe that any healthy individual should enjoy pornography. It doesn’t have to be graphic hard-core porno with girls stretched every which way; it can be as simple as a harlequin novel and the depiction of a consummation of a long unrequited love. I don’t care how you get your porn, just enjoy it.
On that note I read an interesting article on divinecaroline on the topic. Take the time and read it (there are three pages, although that doesn’t seem apparent at first), I believe it has a lot to say about the typical disgust and aversion you hear about girls (and guys) having.
To all of that I say, porn is not the problem. Just because someone likes looking at naked bodies exchanging bodily fluids does not make him a pervert, disrespectful, an infidel, disinterested in his lover or dissatisfied with his lover. It makes him human. It’s about fantasy, imagination, desire, lust. And what, please tell me, is wrong with that? Most men (women, too) can separate fantasy from reality. Do you think Jenna Jameson is going to fly off the screen and do to him what she’s doing onscreen? Not a chance, and he doesn’t think so, either. And if you believe he thinks so … either you’re sorely underestimating his intelligence or you need to ask yourself, what in the world is a smart gal like you doing with a fool like him?
When you watch porn (and you should, especially if you have some sort of judgment about it—there’s no other way to understand it), what exactly is it that you object to? Are you projecting your own insecurities or messages of shame from your childhood onto it?
What I believe the real issue is is put perfectly in this quote:
The problem, of course, isn’t porn itself. If something, anything, is done in secret, in excess, if it’s somehow compromising the relationship, well, then there’s a problem

So be open about your porno gentlemen and ladies, the world will be better for it.
Tara was nice enough to send me this link about a Yale student allegedely inseminating and then aborting herself “as often as possible”. She is using the blood and videos from the miscarriages/abortions in an art project that will be on display later in the year. Thanks Tara!
Art major Aliza Shvarts’ project has attracted reactions of disgust and outrage since the Yale Daily News broke the story of her upcoming exhibit on Thursday.
“It’s clearly depraved. I think the poor woman has got some major mental problems,” said National Right to Life Committee President Wanda Franz. “She’s a serial killer. This is just a horrible thought.”
Critics on campus said the exhibit sounds like a shock-and-awe look at the highly sensitive issue of abortion and called it a sick stunt to get attention.
But Shvarts said the goal of the project is to spark debate and discussion about the connection between art and the human body.
Y’know, nowhere in the article does it say any of these insemination attempts was successful, or that she took any kind of pregnancy test. And I have a feeling that an abortifacient would produce more or less the same result whether a woman was pregnant or not (what with an early-stage foetus being too small to see anyway).
Hate to throw a bucket of blood on this parade, but I’ll bet you dollars to zygotes that she didn’t throw the baby out with the bloodbath.
Personally I think this is fine. If someone wants to get pregnant and then abort it, collect the juices and smear them on a cube with video playing on the walls that is fine by me. I just worry about her Rug Doctor bill. Oh dear, was that a double entendre? Thoughts?
UPDATE:
Ms. Shvarts (which rhymes with farts) has posted a statement. I like to think that she was giving her womb a good napalming every few weeks but apparantly not (or so she says)
Ms. Shvarts is engaged in performance art. Her art project includes visual representations, a press release and other narrative materials. She stated to three senior Yale University officials today, including two deans, that she did not impregnate herself and that she did not induce any miscarriages. The entire project is an art piece, a creative fiction designed to draw attention to the ambiguity surrounding form and function of a woman’s body.
She is an artist and has the right to express herself through performance art.
Had these acts been real, they would have violated basic ethical standards and raised serious mental and physical health concerns.
Also, what is it with me and cute Canadian girls? The girl in this video is Skye Sweetnam and I think she’s pretty. Jake says that she’s a singer or something. Who knows‽
This is either the best or worst idea ever. “Carlos” is a shopping cart pushing robot in the shape of the bottom half of a human. The best part? It’s on fire.
If you could increase the look of this thing a bit you could really scare the shit out of people with your bottom-half shopping cart pushing robot on fire. Imagine it shambling around in circles at your local grocery store parking lot endlessly. Wonderful.
Today in 1989 in Sheffield England 96 Liverpool FC fans died in a human stampede during the FA cup semi-final between Liverpool FC and Nottingham Forest FC. Looking into it it appears that quite a few crushes have happened over the last while. Most notably is the Khodynka Tragedy in which 1,389 people died and another 1,300 were injured in a human stampede. Wow.
The Hillsborough disaster occurred on April 15, 1989, at Hillsborough, a football stadium in Sheffield, England, resulting in the loss of 96 lives.
Liverpool F.C. were involved in their 17th FA Cup Semi-Final, to be played against Nottingham Forest F.C. at Hillsborough, the home of Sheffield Wednesday F.C..
Football had been plagued by hooliganism for years in many countries but particularly in the United Kingdom. Football hooliganism in the UK often involves pitch invasions and the throwing of a variety of missiles - in response most stadiums placed high chainlink fences between the seats and terraces and the pitch (terraces were cheaper standing areas without seats). However, it was not hooliganism that day, but the fear of it, that led to the death of ninety-six people.
The stadium was divided into two parts in order to keep the opposing fans apart: the Liverpool supporters being assigned to the Leppings Lane End. Kick off was scheduled for 3.00pm and many of the Liverpool supporters were late arriving. By 2.45pm there was a considerable buildup of fans outside the turnstiles at the Leppings Lane End, all eager to enter the stadium before the match started. With a crowd of 5000 fans (est) trying to get through the turnstiles the police decided to open a second set of gates which did not have turnstiles. The resulting inpouring of hundreds (possibly thousands) of fans at the rear of the terraces caused a crush at the front where people were pressed against the fencing. For some time the problem was not noticed and it was not until 3:06pm that the referee stopped the game. By this time a small door in the fencing had been opened and by this route many escaped the crush - others climbed over the fencing.
The pitch quickly started to fill with people sweating and gasping for breath and with the bodies of the dead. The police and ambulance services were overwhelmed by the scale of the disaster and fans helped as best they could, many attempting CPR and some tearing down advertising hoardings to act as makeshift stretchers. The crush ultimately took the lives of 96 people.
Graphic footage of the disaster was available because the match was being broadcast and this along with the number of fatalities made an extreme impact on the general population.
A permanent tribute to those who lost their lives can be found alongside the Shankly Gates at Anfield. A further tribute was set up in 1999 at Hillsborough.
Interestingly a few days after the tragedy during a match between AC Milan and Real Madrid the match was stopped 6 minutes into the first half for a moment of silence.
The Hillsborough disaster did not only touch clubs in England but the disaster was known worldwide and touched clubs around the world.
On 19 April 1989 (the following Wednesday of the disaster), a European Cup semi final between AC Milan and Real Madrid was played. The referee blew his whistle 6 minutes into the game to stop play and hold a minute’s silence for those who lost their lives tragically at Hillsborough. About 20 seconds into the silence the Milan fans on the Curva Sud began to sing Liverpool’s anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone” as a tribute to those who died.
Every few seconds I find something on the internet that I don’t understand but I find awesome anyway. Sometimes I will follow it through and find out what the hell is about. This is one example of a ‘jackpot’ happening. The comic on the left is a 1,000 pound bag of amazing. I thought it was awesome before I discovered that it is from a sweet song. I have found the video for you, dear readers, and have put it on display. Try not to die from the awesome explosion that is about to happen in your BRAIN. If you feel your ears bleeding or have severe brain explosion syndrome (SBES) you should see a doctor immediately. I’m not kidding.
Split your lungs with blood and thunder
When you see the white whale
Break your backs and crack your oars men
If you wish to prevail
This ivory leg is what propels me
Harpoons thrust in the sky
Aim directly for his crooked brow
And look him straight in the eye
I can see what you see not
vision milky then eyes rot
When you turn they will be gone
whispering their hidden song
Then you see what cannot be
Shadows move where light should be
Out of darkness out of mind
Cast down into the halls of the blind
