This is undoubtedly a trailer for Beyond Good and Evil 2. The first Beyond Good and Evil is one of the best adventure games I have had the privilege to play. I guess I’ll have to play it again before the sequel comes out. Darn.
I won’t pretend to understand half of what is in this article, but there is some cool stuff going on. Apparently a new type of simple electronic has been invented at HP. It has been known that this element existed for 30 or 40 years now but it has just now been possible to make one. This bugger is known as the memristor. It has the property of changing resistance once power is put through it. It will then remember its new state until energy is passed through it again. Apparently people have just been looking at things from the wrong angle.
Electronic theorists have been using the wrong pair of variables all these years–voltage and charge. The missing part of electronic theory was that the fundamental pair of variables is flux and charge,” said Chua. “The situation is analogous to what is called “Aristotle’s Law of Motion, which was wrong, because he said that force must be proportional to velocity. That misled people for 2000 years until Newton came along and pointed out that Aristotle was using the wrong variables. Newton said that force is proportional to acceleration–the change in velocity. This is exactly the situation with electronic circuit theory today. All electronic textbooks have been teaching using the wrong variables–voltage and charge–explaining away inaccuracies as anomalies. What they should have been teaching is the relationship between changes in voltage, or flux, and charge
Pretty slick stuff. Can you imagine all the new devices this discovery will enable? I call first dibs on the 100 yottabyte inner brain implant!
The memristor is our salvation, because it works better and better as you make it smaller and smaller,” said Chua. “The era of nanoscale electronics will be enabled by the memristor. This is not just an invention, it is a basic scientific discovery. It has always been there–we just had to face these nanoscale problems to realize its importance.
The memristor is not just a replacement technology for existing memory devices, but will be used to make a whole range of new types of devices that no one has ever thought of before.
I just purchased the new Roku Netflix Player. It was mainly an impulse purchase, but I got a sweet $150 bonus at work last week (I call it the ’spit in the face bonus’) and so I’m buying technology with it. My friend at work reads Gizmodo very regularly and linked me an article about it. Apparently this fancy box was released today making me an early adopter, hooray!
This bad boy hooks into my Netflix account and into my television providing me with delicious streaming television. It’s like an AppleTV but way cheaper and a large free library of great movies. Sure, it doesn’t let me do the YouTubes, podcasts, music or photos but hey, I wasn’t going to do any of that anyway. Ok, I’ll miss out on the YouTubin’ but whatevs.
Movies and TV episodes in your Netflix Instant Queue appear right on your TV screen. Use the included remote control to browse through the items you’ve added to your Instant Queue and pick something to watch — whenever you want. You can even read descriptions and rate movies, right from the comfort of your couch.
The Netflix Player lets you explore even more possibilities from the world’s largest online movie rental service. Access a growing library of over 10,000 instant movies and TV episodes. Watch as many as you like, as often as you want—with no additional fees. You’re in control with the power to play anytime and finish watching whenever you like.
I’m also pretty certain that two awesome things will happen with this guy too. I’m certain that I can transport this from house to house and movie enjoyment will follow me wherever I choose to go. I’ll be like the Pied Piper of movies with a lot less children drowning! Secondly I bet (but am not certain) there will be a sizable hacking community built up around this item. Hopefully these masters of hack, lords of zeros and ones and divas of databases can conjure up some magicsauce. Then I’ll be YouTubin’ all day long mofuggah!
A Softer World is quickly becoming one of my favorite webcomics. Be sure to hover over each image to get a little more out of it. These ‘alt’ tags are used in XKCD and Dinosaur Comics as well. Maybe this should tell me something: if you used ‘alt’ tags in your webcomics then I will love you more.
Colorwar held a contest a while back for people to submit pictures of themselves when they were children and then to recreate these pictures using their current selves. Some of the submissions are wonderful. Take this one for example:
The winners all submitted wonderful sets (obviously) but there are many, many more that are also good that didn’t quite make the cut.
The corporation that I work for has locked down the internet. I can no longer check my gmail accounts and until moments ago I could not even SEE this blog. I cannot view youtube or google video and most of my webcomics are verboten. Thankfully XKCD and Dinosaur Comics are still kicking. I can take solace knowing that Big Brother loves me.

Later on in the journey we encountered the best part of our journey: Wheeling, West Virginia. Wheeling is the worst town I have ever been to and that includes East St. Louis (which we also ran into during this trip). Before we can properly bash Wheeling, WV we should learn a bit about it’s storied history.
The name “Wheeling” is of the American Adena tribe derivation for “place of the skull.” At the confluence of Wheeling Creek and the Ohio River near what is now 16th and Main Streets, a white settler was scalped and decapitated, and the severed head displayed.
In 2000 31,419 people lived in the great city of Wheeling but the city hit its population peak back in 1930 at 61,659. Wheeling is split between the West Virginia side of the Ohio River and Wheeling Island. On the island is a large residential area plus a casino and racetrack known as Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack which has a tropical theme despite it’s location. It does flood in the summer, though.
The people of Wheeling are aloof and backwards. We tried several places in the city but were unable to find gasoline. Resorting to asking the townsfolk where to get gas we went into a McDonalds where everyone eating and working there were related. I wish I were kidding. They couldn’t help us either, go figure. We eventually had to leave Wheeling and get gas outside of town despite running on fumes but not before we toured the lovely downtown. Downtown Wheeling is quite large once you take into account that only 30,000 or so people live there. The buildings are tall and almost all of them are boarded up. The best part is that it all nestles up to a groady river that doesn’t look potable. It is truly picturesque.
We made the trip in around 22 hours of straight travel taking turns driving and running the radio. My sister treated us to a nice italian meal and Jake got to meet up with his crazy (in a good way) sister, Mandy. I don’t remember much of the return trip because I was too exhausted from driving and moving but we refused to go back through Wheeling; we went through DC and Memphis instead.
This is a sick video. This mario level plays itself with no interaction from the user at all. Best of all it is plays famous songs from video games (mostly Japanese) while its running using sound effects from Super Mario Brothers.
Here is a song list. The names don’t show up right on my computer at work because they won’t let me install the language pack. I hope it works for you.
